Roku is no stranger to streaming devices. In fact, in 2020, it released seven devices that range from the $30 Roku Express to the $100 Roku Ultra.
But even their latest and greatest technology doesn’t hold a candle to the 2017 Roku Streaming Stick Plus. Providing HDR and 4K video from all your favorite services such as Apple TV, Netflix, Disney Plus, and more, it also comes with voice control on par with Google and Amazon.
Roku Your World
It’s ok if your house has as many Apple products as one of its stores. The Roku Streaming Stick Plus supports AirPlay, which is something that Amazon and Google devices are yet to implement. You can connect to your TV wirelessly for apps and show off your photos. It also means you don’t need to spend a ton of money on the Apple TV 4K. Even Amazon’s Alexa is compatible with it.
Speaking of 4K, you need to ensure you have the right streaming plans to experience the wonders of this resolution. This means upgrading Netflix to the most expensive option. Naturally, it will also require more bandwidth. Some platforms like Amazon recommend a minimum of 15mbps, but Netflix and YouTube need 20mbps.
How Does the Roku Streaming Stick Plus Work?
Thankfully, the Roku Streaming Stick Plus can sit nicely behind your TV in a spare HDMI port. The wireless receiver plugs into a mini-USB connection, and the receiver can use the USB port on your TV or an AC adaptor to power.
Once you’re up and running, the home page is completely customizable so that you can make sure your favorite tiles are right at the top. All of the apps are lightning fast to load, and navigating feels smooth no matter what service you’re using.
Exclusive Features
There are some extra features you should know about that you’ll only find on Roku devices. You’ll get your own feed where you can follow movies and tv shows for updates and availability. You can also listen through headphones via the app so that you don’t wake up anyone in the house.
The Featured Free option is a gamechanger though. It allows you to watch shows from network apps without having to sign in. For example, you might see a tile for the latest Family Guy episode, and clicking on it will take you directly to the Fox Now app and start the show. Without showing the annoying ads beforehand.
Tried and Tested
The Roku Streaming Stick Plus might be older than a lot of other devices on shelves, including the company’s own products, but that doesn’t mean it’s still not the best value for money when it comes to 4K and HDR items.
You get all of the exclusive Roku features, 4K and HDR streaming, and it’s compatible with current Amazon and Apple devices. All for a fraction of the price compared to its competitors. What else is there left to say?
